Niches are important to bloggers…very important apparently. If you are a visitor to blogging advice on Pinterest or any other blogging forums, they will regularly tell you that you have to identify your niche. In order for anyone to buy in to your blog and read it regularly then you need to be consistent.
Consistent? That’s not really one of your strengths is it Scribble?
No, it isn’t. Take some features of this blog which have fallen by the wayside – Greek recipes, Lovely Lyrics, Poetry, Beautiful Blogging… I started out with good intentions that I would post regularly out them all. The trouble is somewhere in-between my thoughts and actions, inspiration kicks in and I start something else. I’m a typical Gemini in that respect. However I am not a total flake. I never post rants, negative or sympathy inducing/attention seeking posts. I write positively, sparkly – the purpose of this blog is for people to enjoy reading it and me to enjoy writing it. Therefore it is going to be an eclectic mish-mash of all things Scribbly, Sparkly and Shiny.
So what does that mean for your niche?
When looking at other blogs and looking at categories I couldn’t whittle my topics down to just four or five. I had closer to a dozen. While I was trying to cut some, I realised they all could be attributed to my three blog themes – scribble, sparkle and shine.
How does that work then?
Well, to put it simply, I named this blog because of my love for scribbles, sparkly things and to ‘shine a light on..’ various topics.
Scribble will include snippets of creative writing. I’m currently working on a book and I’m very excited about it. Occasionally I may share snippets or look for feedback.
In addition there will be poems, lyrics and writing prompts for those among you who fancy scribbling yourself. The Beautiful Blogging series will also feature here along with Bullet Journaling if I ever get round to it. I’ve recently started keeping a Bullet Journal and that has quickly turned into keeping two – one for personal and one for the blog. Any excuse for buying notebooks!
Sparkle is all the things that help me sparkle – healthy living features strongly here because I am keen to live a healthier life. I underwent Gastric Bypass Surgery in 2008 and I am still working at my weight loss journey. Here I will share recipes, tips, stories and anything else relevant to a healthy life. I’ll also be talking honestly and openly about why wearing a wig isn’t so bad, did I mention I have alopecia? Tea reviews will live here as did you know the health benefits of tea? Check out RussTea’s blog to learn more.
This will mainly be positive, uplifting and inspirational posts. Take my post on inspirational quotes, or my thoughts on being safe – my take on what was quite a difficult situation.http://scribblesparkleshine.com/2015/12/cyberstalker/ I’d like to think that by sharing these sorts of posts then people in a similar position can learn and feel better about their own experiences.
This is the miscellaneous category if you like. Things that make me smile – knitting, books and films I’ve enjoyed, travel plans. Anything that makes me smile and I think others would like, you will find them here.
I hope that clears things up – whilst it is not as definite a niche as some bloggers have, I think it’s the best I can do with a life as crazy and hectic as mine at the moment. Working a full time job, writing a book, being a pet mum, girlfriend, knitting three big projects and working on an exciting social media project are all exhausting, rewarding, inspiring and so very unreasonable when it comes to categorising. So in response to those blog posts that say ‘you must find your niche’ I say SCREW YOU. This is my space and I’ll do as I please. If you are a fellow blogger I’d be interested to know what your thoughts on finding your niche are.
If you have any thoughts on the importance of categorising then feel free to get in touch.
